Starwood acquisition of French Taittinger group
The Taittinger Group has been purchased by its main subsidiary, Société du Louvre and the American real estate and private equity company, Starwood Capital for $3.47 billion.
The Taittinger Group has been purchased by its main subsidiary, Société du Louvre and the American real estate and private equity company, Starwood Capital for $3.47 billion.
The purchase was completed less that a month after the group’s 77-year-old chairman Claude Taittinger announced the family owned business was for sale. The first-round of bidding included more than 40 participants and has been the talk of France’s business world.
The Taittinger takeover includes not only the champagne vineyards but some France’s most esteemed luxury-goods manufacturers, Baccarat Crystal, plus fourteen luxury hotels. Its flagship hotel is Paris's Crillion at the Place de la Concorde that is famous for housing Heads of State as well as rock stars.
The Starwood Group intends to sell off the Taittinger holdings other than the hotels on which they will concentrate. It’s the business Starwood knows the best.
In the meantime, many French say this is another example of the French selling out to American investors. If nothing else, it’s the end of an era.
