St. Petersburg: Number of Five-Star Hotels Set to Double Within a Year

Intercontinental and Ramada are the latest international hotel operators to announce their arrival on the St. Petersburg market next year, while Rezidor SAS also signaled further expansion, Maxim Sokolov, chairman of the city committee for investment and strategic projects, was quoted by Interfax as saying.
“Intercontinental is at the moment in negotiations with those investors who have already started constructing hotels but are yet to find an operator,” Sokolov said.
St. Petersburg already has five 5-star hotels – Grand Hotel Europe, Astoria, Nevskij Palace, Radisson SAS and Emerald.
Earlier this month Raffles International announced the opening of a 5-star business-class hotel in the city by 2007 under the brand Swissotel, while the Renaissance construction firm plans to build a 5-star hotel by the end of next year with the financial backing of Indonesian company Sampoerna.
French operator Accor, which opened a 4-star Novotel in the center of St. Petersburg this year, has already announced the construction of 3-star Ibis and 5-star Sofitel.
According to Sokolov, the international operator Hilton has been interested in coming to St. Petersburg for a long time.

Westin Hotels to Ban Smoking Indoors

An executive with Westin Hotels and Resorts says the hotel chain is going smoke-free next month, adding $200 to the bill of anyone who violates the policy.
The chain is banning smoking indoors and poolside at all 77 of its properties in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.
Enica Thompson, spokeswoman for the American Hotel and Lodging Association, says this will be the first major American chain to go smoke-free.
Customers will be informed about the policy at check-in. If a guest breaks the rule, a $200 fee will be tacked onto the bill.
The policy will not apply to Westin's overseas hotels or other chains, like Sheraton, that are under the same parent company, Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Inc.
The ban will apply to hallways, lobbies, and restaurants.

Tsunami news

It has almost been 14 months since the devastation of the Tsunami hit Southern Asia . So much has been acheived in these 14 months. Recently we saw the opening of the Le Meridien Resort & Spa in Khao Lak, where in the region almost 6500 hotel rooms were destroyed. Soon the Holiday Inn Patong Beach will be re-opening it's newly refurbished rooms. It is fantastic to see the rebuilding processes, resorts re-opening & tourism numbers returning to the areas affected.
